Blooming - A New Cleanse & Cut - Why We Should Juice Cleanse

It is now the third week of 2013, it seems to have come so quick! I have had a little panic in the midst of  the break thinking i should feel more ready for the year ahead than i do now. Christmas and New years have been lovely, i have had a nice break away with my mum and pop, there is now just over one week until i start uni again and the year is starting to take shape... which is exciting!

Before...
There are many new changes coming for 2013, some i still need to adjust to and brace myself for. And as my word for 2013 - Bloom - has given me inspiration for both new adjustments and changes in all aspects of my life, there are a few things i must do first in the week before i head back to uni.

1. I am cutting my hair!! Why? I have wanted to have long hair for a while which has seen me grow it and grow it but miss treat it until it has become long... but a mess! So as a symbol of blooming, of starting fresh and making new healthy changes into my life AND with a want of a new hair style and to have actual hair back... i finally cut it!!

My new hair cut <3
2. I am catching up with my home friends to keep my those wonderful people close to heart no matter where we are :)

3. I am having a 3 day juicing cleanse!! I have never done one before but when it crossed my mind it became a necessity for me to do not just cleanse the toxins from my body, but to also cleanse and clarify my mind as i prepare for the new year and its changes ahead.

So starting this Saturday night, the 12th of January, i am starting a 3 day juicing cleanse! Would you like to join me?? Keep reading to hear about my why's and how's...

A juice cleanse is abstaining from food and drinking only fresh juice for an extended period of time to cleanse, heal and jump start health. A juice detox is not a starving or depriving oneself. It’s actually can quickly help your body’s abilty to heal, repair and rejuvenate. Knowing how to cleanse properly is key, and it’s not hard. The most important things to remember is you must prepare for your fast by eating a clean and light diet and also reintroduce food gently once the fast is over. Hence there are three parts to a juice diet - Easing in, the juice fast, and easing out. In planning for your juice fast, the first thing you need to decide is how long your juice fast will be. Juice fasts range anywhere from 1 day to 60 days and even longer. The most popular tend to be 3 day, 7 day, 14 day and 30 day juice fasts. The longer your juice fast, the longer your body will have to heal and cleanse. If you have a serious health condition or are on medications, you’ll want to talk to your doctor before starting.

Benefits of a juice cleanse

Studies have shown and doctors have observed that juice fasting accomplishes relief of symptoms for many people. Here is a list of a few things that fasting has proved beneficial for:
  • Arthritis and joint pain
  • Asthma
  • ADD
  • Blood sugar (hypo and hyperglycemia)
  • Candida
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Gastrointestinal problems like colitis, crohn’s, diverticulosis, reflux, irritable bowel syndrome
  • Breast cysts
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Bad breath
  • Headaches
  • Heavy metal poisoning
  • High blood pressure
  • Nausea
  • Obesity
  • PMS
  • Prostate problems
  • Vision problems
  • Skin problems (like eczema, hives, psoriasis, dermatitis, psoriasis)
  • Lung /breathing issues
  • Urinary problems
But you don't have to be suffering anything to feel wonderful benefits of a juice cleanse!

How fasting works (Derived from 'All about Juicing')

Fasting spares your body from the big job and energy it takes to eat and digest food and expending the waste. By giving your body a break from this and automatically focuses the extra energy on cleansing (are bodies really are that smart!!).

During a fast, your body turns to the liver for an alternate fuel source, by converting your stored sugars into glucose. Usually by the third day, these sugars are used up, and starts using stored up fat as its source.(This is why it is usually recommended to stay on a juice diet for at least 3-5 days)

When this happens, the benefits start… as most toxins from the food we eat and air we breath deposit from our blood into our fat tissues, your body starts to breakdown and eliminate toxins in our fat stores as it uses our fats for energy. It reduces inflammation in the digestive tract, thins the blood (more oxygen is then delivered to your body through your blood stream), and more energy is available for other body systems to repair anything that’s wrong. It makes sense, right? Right! If you let your body heal, it will.

Because of our environment, how polluted our world and food have become, never has it been more important to full body detox. Pollution and lack of nutrition bring on health issues or worsens them. Cleansing the body through a juice diet is smart to do at least once a year.

At the very least, you could try a 3 day fasting cleanse or a 7 day detox. For the braver souls, 30 day and 60 day juice cleanses are also popular!

How will our body react and what to expect?? (Derived from 'All about Juicing')

Each person experiences a juice detox and juice fast side effects differently depending on their body, their past, current illnesses and eating habits. Successive cleanses are usually different then the first cleanse.

Minor ailments such as colds, fevers, skin spots, headaches, pimples/boils, fatigue, dizziness, sinus pressure, runny nose, loose or hard stools, low energy and body odor are extremely common.

The cleanse is like a time machine…it takes you back through old problems and you re-experience old conditions as you stir up old toxins in your body. Some people say that their juice fast side effect consist of having flashbacks of feelings or tastes. People that use to smoke cigarettes years ago say they can taste it in their mouth. People that had done recreational drugs feel a little high as the drugs get released from the fat cells in the body. Joints hurt and sinus problems re arise.

This is called a healing crisis. It’s a good thing. These detox symptoms are a sign that the body is cleansing. It is important to push through, remember - A little discomfort now will do a world of difference later!

This is not unusual or strange. Your body is going through a withdrawal of sugar, caffeine, processed foods, pollution, etc, at the same time stirring up toxins in the body. Keep in mind these are not because of the juice detox diet, it’s based off of what you've done to your body in the past.

This happens because one or more of your organs is forced to cleanse at an accelerated pace in order to deal with a large amount of wastes from tissues in the body. It causes discomfort. Some people experience discomfort for just a few minutes, some have symptoms that last hours. The longer and harder you have discomfort, the more you needed the juice detox.

Just keep in mind that you aren’t dying, you’re getting better! You can’t know what to expect, as small problems from the past could resurface as a bigger problem, possibly catching an early problem developing into a bigger issue someday. For me, i am a sweet tooth and i have no doubt that i will be resurfacing some refined sugar toxins accumulated over the past many years of satisfying my sweet love.

Most people say that they have one day during the juice diet is particularly hard to get through but it's common to feel good after 4-5 days. The first few days of any detox diet will be the days that your body will cleanse the most rapidly.

Other common changes that people experience as juice fast side effects (depending on individual variables and lifestyle) are:
  • Menstrual cycle changes
  • Bowel movements can smell foul
  • Sinuses draining and mucus loosening in thought
  • Extreme nausea enough to make you vomit. Most of the time, mucus is what is vomited and nausea dissipates. Drink ginger tea to help.
  • Bad breath
  • Worsening body odor
  • Skin worsens (blotchy spots, acne, etc)
You’ll have to read your body and access the situation as it comes. Most people power through it, but you can do a few things to get through it like get a massage, colonic, enema, body wrap, rest by reading or watching tv, acupuncture, sleeping or a bath. I must listen to my body and not involve myself in my heavy exercises while detoxing as while sweating also releases toxins this may do more harm than good and only light exercises should be undertaken.

If it’s too much for you to handle, it is recommended to eat raw foods (like vegetable sticks or a raw salad), then starting up on the juice fast again. You could also start again at a later date when you feel stronger or more hopeful.

All of this said, it's different for everyone and many people experience good juice detoxes where only one or two of these symptoms appear and they feel happier, mind clearer, and get more energy every day! In the end, focus on the other side, picture yourself as a determine, committed and a healthier you! If you can, have a juice detox with a buddy to go through the same process together and tell each other how you feel, if you have different side effects (if any) look at each others lifestyle and make up and see if you can figure out how and why you experience it differently... And you will get through it :)

I think that is enough food (or juice :P) for thought for now... in my next post i will write about how to go about the juice cleanse and what juices i plan on making... all i can say now is i am glad i am planning it a few days in advance as i will need a big Vege shop up (Yay!!). For now i hope you might be inspired to join me on your own juice cleanse if not now than sometime in the not too distant future :)

Raw Esperance Treats and Travels - Rejuvenate with Raw

My mum and i have set off on a little get away with our two little dogs to stay with my Grand dad in Esperance - Yay! It is a long drive, 8 hours in total with a few break stops to stretch our legs and let the dogs out. But you know what a long drive means? You need to be properly fueled up with the best food possible... Green and Raw!!

So although it took an extra 10 minutes, mum made her delicious green smoothies for us to take on the road, mine couldn't have come at any better time than half way through after a warm Lake Grace petrol stop! Our chopped carrot, celery and capsicum, apples and cherries were so refreshing to munch on too :)

On the road with Green Smoothies!
Chopped vege's to munch :)
Lake Grace Roadhouse... my fuel!
I have a new found mission each time i visit a new (or old) place, i find myself hunting down any health food shop, health food cafe or equivalent and find what delicious and nutritious delights i can! While google and true local knowledge made my mission not so possible in Esperance, my mum and i came across a littl shop hidden away in some old little buildings... it was called Naturally Esperance! Inside were a range of health and beauty products from facial scrubs, teas, yoga and meditation products, tinderbox and a few superfoods such as cacao powder and granolas! Success our hidden Esperance gem!

At Naturally Esperance :)
But what was more exciting was talking to the lovely lady at the counter, so bright, bubbly and friendly and my mum and i were excited to be talking away to her with our similar passion and exploration of health and nutrition! She inspired me to keep going with my raw food and also added to a little flame burning within me to learn and practice yoga for both the body and soul. Talking about India being the heart of yoga made me dream of one day practicing at a retreat over there and feeling the wonderful stretch and energy of the yoga poses! As we also talked about raw foods she handed a video for us to watch, one she had found the other day call 'Rejuvenate with Raw - the raw food connection' by Karen Bartz who owns an organic health cafe called Soul Tree in Perth... how had i not known this in my past 4 years living there!?

She has a website - called 'Teach the World Raw' which i am in the process of exploring :) From her DVD i wanted to jot down a few keepsakes to remember...

"The body is the most amazing piece of machinery, do you know any appliance that can heal itself and live for over 80 years?"

"The difference between cooked and raw... plant a cooked almond and a raw almond in the ground, the cooked will shrivel up into mold while the raw will grow an almond tree for many years to come :) try it yourself!!"

"Raw food can save the world!! Bit by bit once you start introducing raw you will increase your health and energy, you will feel the difference and make further steps to enhance your world, buy less meat, invest in a compost bin, grow your own vegetables and fruits... you are not just saving yourself but bit by bit you are helping to save the world!"

"You will observe with concern how long a useful truth may be known and exist, before it is generally received and practiced on" - Benjamin Franklin

"If you go 80% you get 80% back but if you go 100% you get 1000% back!! Food combining is important to going raw to not overwhelm your system unless you are on a detox."

"Reeducate your body and taste all different foods, your body will learn what nutrition is in each different foods and you will learn what your body craves when you need certain nutrition and be able to eat according to your bodies needs :)"

The lady also went on to make cauliflower sushi, raw pizza and raw fruit cake in front of us, so easy and full of ideas! Funnily enough i switched to my Facebook and found a friends recent post on...

"Just ate fresh coconut straight from the husk, tastes weird. I think we are so used to artificial flavours that we forget what it actually tastes like"

And this is so sad but true!! Oh how i wish people would eat more fresh and wholesome foods again and experience the wonderful tastes and flavours! Certainly, some may not wish to alter their eating patterns or lifestyle, this is a personal choice we should all be allowed to make but sadly few are made aware of the choice. When people ask me “So as a raw-fooder, what do you eat?” I will say "the best food I have ever tasted!"

Thank you lovely lady at the little Esperance Gem :) please visit Naturally Esperance when you visit Esperance WA! Our little town visit left us finding many more health products for more inspiration...

Mum and i were contemplating on taking our own juicer to Esperance... but another little gem was discovered!! A little fresh fruit and vegetable juicing van sets up along the beach front in town everyday delivering wonderful freshly squeezed juices - who says you can't be healthy on a holiday?? It was bliss :) it was lovely to see it so popular in the heat with all the tourists too!

S'Juicing van :)
Juicing ladies!
I am now content....
A morning bike ride to the Esperance Jetty was a wonderful start to the day, and with a few bits of site seeing at the Esperance Stone Henge how could we resist practice our yoga on the alter?? The Henge itself is a replica of the one in the UK and is amazing up on the hill overlooking Esperance, very serene at sunset :)

Stone Henge Yoga :)
Keeping up our health whilst travelling we do pretty well with mostly raw lunches bar a couple of rice crackers to hold our veges! I have found pop's blender and still enjoy my banana chia seed porridge for breakfast... yum :)

Holiday lunches
I look forward to trying our next juice at the juice van whilst having some R&R on the beach!

'Lets Go Nuts' Biscuits - Raw

Crepe's, check! Dried apples, check! Next up on my dehydrator list was some raw biscuits! Well the recipe i found was for some nut bars but i altered it and made my own 'Lets Go Nuts' Biscuits because quite frankly i am going nuts about my dehydrator and my new found raw food! If you don't have a drhydrator you could even turn these into some nutty snack balls to put in the fridge or freezer for the healthy munchies or pick me up, BUT i finally made my biscuits :D

'Lets Go Nuts' Biscuits

Ingredients
3/4 cup almonds
1/3 cup Brazil nuts
4 dried apple pieces (only 4 as i dried these the other day they are sacred to me!! otherwise use 1/2 cup)
1 tablespoon pepitas
1/4 cup mixed sultanas and currants
1 cup shredded coconut
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup raw honey

Soak the nuts, apples, sultanas currants and seeds for 8 hours or overnight in enough water to cover by about 2-3cm. Drain and leave to drip dry for about an hour.

Soaked nuts :)
Put the soaked ingredients, coconut and cinnamon in a food processor and blend until you have a granular consistency (i did about 30 seconds). Add the honey and blend again for around 60 seconds until you have a moist dough.

Use your hands to form bars or biscuits. My biscuits were around 3cm in diameter and made 22 biscuits, and place on the dehydrator mesh screens allowing 3cm between biscuits.

Dehydrate at 41 degrees (105F) for 16-20 hours depending on how crisp you like the biscuits. I did mine for 16 hours and they were crisp on the outside but still a little chewy on the inside (how i like them!). Then remove and set to cool for 30 minutes and they will firm up.

Store the biscuits in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or at room temperature for up to 1 week. What's so good about these biscuits in they are a wonderful portable snack for work, uni, the gym, backpacks... anything as they do not soften or melt :) They are a wonderul source of vitamins B and E, zinc (for healthy skin, hair and nails), calcium, selenium, magnesium, iron, protein, natural carbohydrates and fibre!

Wild Rice & Tuna Salad

This recipe is not entirely raw, but it is so delicious!! It uses wild rice which is a type of edible grass, an excellent low fat, high fiber grain. The rice has a dark chocolate-like color and has been described as a slightly nutty, smokey taste due to the outer case it retains after harvesting. A 100 gram portion of the rice provides 100 calories. It is a good source of carbohydrates which supply energy to the body. It contains protein and dietary fiber. It also contains vitamins B1, B2, B3 and B9. Mineral content includes iron, potassium, phosphorous, zinc and magnesium. It is an excellent choice of grain due to its high nutritive value.

Wild Rice - cooked
Protein content in the rice exceeds that of wheat as one cup gives you about 6.5 grams of protein which contains all the essential amino acids.

The B proteins enhance the health of the skin, hair, eyes and liver while also promoting the health of the stomach and intestines. They assist in the breakdown of carbohydrates, protein and fats into glucose. The activities of the nervous system also require vitamin B for optimal performance.

One cup of wild rice also provides 15 percent of the recommended daily value of zinc. The role of zinc in boosting the body’s immunity has been widely established, it plays a vital role in cell division and helps to produce essential immune system cells. Many viral infections can be treated and prevented with zinc! It plays a vital role in the health of the skin and facilitates healthy cell division and proper formation of tissues. Zinc facilitates the supply of vitamin A from the liver to the skin to repair damaged skin. It has been found helpful in the treatment of acne, diaper rash, cold sores and burns.

The magnesium in wild rice helps to support calcium as it builds and strengthens bones. Magnesium facilitates proper nerve and muscle functions. It also promotes the smooth circulation of blood and maintains normal heart rhythm. Inadequate magnesium can result in soft bones, muscle weakness and elevated blood pressure. One cup of wild rice provides 13 percent of the recommended daily value of magnesium.

In comparison, brown rice is a whole grain, meaning that both the germ and the bran parts of the grain have been preserved. In white rice, these have been polished away. As a result, brown rice is higher in magnesium and other minerals and also has more fiber. For example, a cup of white long-grain rice contains just one gram of fiber, whereas a cup of brown rice contains four. As a point of reference, you’re shooting for between 25 and 30 grams of fiber each day. One of the things fiber does for you is slow down the speed at which carbohydrates are converted into blood sugar. Said another way, fiber lowers the “glycemic load” of a food. When you’re talking about glycemic load, lower is better.

Compared to brown rice, wild rice is higher in protein and lower in carbohydrates—that means it has a significantly lower glycemic load. It’s also higher in vitamin A and folic acid but not quite as high in minerals. And even though it’s quite low in total fat, wild rice is also a decent source of omega-3s, and has a great omega-3 to omega-6 ratio.

This wild rice and tuna salad was part of an antipasto dinner my family and i had and was a bit of an experiment turned into a future lunch time (or dinner) favourite!

Antipasto dinner... yum!
Wild Rice Tuna Salad

Ingredients
50g Wild rice (i used half a 100g packet of Cambrian wild rice)
1/2 cup chopped button mushrooms
1/2 cup frozen peas, thawed
1 small can of tuna in springwater drained (around 80g - you could try a flavoured tuna if you like!)
2 sprigs of spring onion finely chopped
Handful of spinach leaves (optional)

Dressing
2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
Pepper to taste

Rinse the wild rice well before you cook to remove unwanted particles. Place the grain in a saucepan and add enough warm water so that it covers the rice. Stir briefly so that any unwanted particles can rise to the top. Skim the particles and drain the water and rinse one more time before you cook. For each cup of rice, add 3 cups of water. Heat the rice until boiling then lower to simmer for 45 minutes, once cooked, the grains split to reveal a purplish-grey interior. Strain the rice, rinse and set aside :)

In a serving bowl, toss the spinach leaves, mushrooms, peas, tuna and spring onion then add the wild rice and mix.

For the dressing combine the ingredients in a small bowl and stir, then drizzle over the rice salad and toss to combine. You now have a delicious wild rice and tuna salad... Too easy!! You can also add in some chopped cherry tomato's which i didn't do as we had tomato's already in another dish but it would also add some more colour to the dish.

2013, Time to Bloom... What will your word be?

For the past few years now my mum and I have joined the many people who find themselves a motivational word for the year. At the end of each year we evaluate what we have done, what we wanted to do, how we ourselves can change to benefit both ourselves and those around us, our environment and how we can apply these changes into the new year. To simplify our goals and how we see ourselves we choose one word which acts to signify and remind us of our goals and who we aim to be over the coming year and also to inspire us to keep going no matter what we are faced with. After much thought I have found my word... Bloom :)

Bloom is the flower of a plant, a condition or time of vigor, freshness and beauty, to shine and glow, to grow or flourish with youth and vigor or to appear or expand suddenly - the prime of life.

In 2013 i will be 23, i have been through many experiences and trials already and i am ready to take on more to become who i was born to be, and in 2013, i am not letting anything stop me from moving forward, no fear, no lack of self confidence, no hint of impossibility, i will move further than i have ever before and quite simply i am ready to bloom! In my medical studies, in my knowledge, in my confidence in myself and what i do, in my fitness and health, very much so in my nutrition and body, in my relationships and of course within me. There is no time like the present, throughout the past we learn from our trials, happiness, success and of course mistakes and use these to create new experiences and to move forward and better the next time. While i have many goals of my own, i encourage you to also have a look at your life and take the time to reflect on the aspects of your own life which you wish to work upon, but don't simply reflect but DO.

Remember the only failure is not to try, you do not know if you don't try and the only impossible is that which we place in our mind. We are the creators of our own past, present and future by making the most out of what we are given and all that we can be....

life, advice, inspirational, beautiful, mulan

And i have a visual reminder of my goals! In primary school my sisters and i would collect the beanie bears, we have over 200 i swear! And we have one called Bloom, so Bloom will sit by me at all times and help guide me through 2013, my little guardian helping me to bloom :)

My little guardian Bloom :)
I am still a bud feeding my body and soul in more ways than one but slow and steady i am opening up, i am blooming to bring forth a new prime in my life. And what better way to help fuel my life as i bloom than the wonderful nutrition of a high raw food diet?? 2013... Bring It On :)

What will your word be for 2013?

“The thought manifests as the word;
The word manifests as the deed;
The deed develops into habit;
And habit hardens into character.
So watch the thought and its way with care,
And let it spring from love
Born out of concern for all beings”.

Greenie Buzzie Bee Smoothie

After a good nights sleep to start the second day of 2013 i was craving a new green smoothie to further kick start the day. Green smoothies are so refreshing!

Guacamole, Hummus and Tahini - Raw

it is New years day a and my sister and i are in charge of making a platter of antipasto goodies and salads for dinner, what is antipasto without a few good home made dips? After all it was time to 'dip' into the new year ;) My sister made the Hummus and i made the Guacamole, you can really taste the difference in flavour with home made dips as oppose to the commercial ones, they are full of so much more flavour!

Guacamole
Guacamole

1 large avocado
1 medium roma tomato finely chopped
1 sprig of spring onion finely chopped
1 glove of garlic crushed
1 tablespoon lemon juice

Cut the avocado in half, pit and scoop the flesh out from the skin placing into a small bowl. Lightly mash the avocado then add and mash in the rest of the ingredients until combined.

Serve in a serving or dip bowl and enjoy with carrot, celery or crackers, or even add to salads or sandwiches :)

Hummus

2 cups sprouted chickpeas
1 large clove garlic crushed
2 teaspoons tahini
1 1/2 teaspoons cumin powder
125ml (1/2 cup) extra virgin olive oil
Juice of 1 large lemon
Salt and black ground pepper to taste

Combine chickpeas and garlic in a food processor or blender and pulse for a few seconds until the chickpeas are ground.

Add the cumin and tahini to the mixture and pulse until they are well combined.

Add the olive oil and blend in then the lemon juice.

Season with salt and black pepper to taste and serve :)

Raw Guacamole and Hummus with our antipasto platter!
You can use Tahini already bought or you can make it yourself and truly raw...

Tahini is popular in Middle Eastern dishes and is a ground paste, like a nut butter, made from sesame seeds.

While being delicious and nutritious, it is often expensive and made from toasted sesame seeds. Making your own raw Tahini can save both money and nutrients and it quite easy.

Soak the sesame seeds to activate them - Soaking nuts and seeds neutralizes a growth inhibiting enzyme that’s found naturally in seeds and nuts and makes them harder to digest. So soaking, makes nuts and seeds easier to digest and more nutritious for the same reasons that sprouts are more nutritious and are loaded with good enzymes that aid digestion.

Raw Tahini (Makes around 2 cups)

1 cup raw (un-toasted) sesame seeds
2 cups water, to soak

Soak the sesame seeds at room temperature for 4 hours in enough water to cover them plus about an inch more, they will swell as they absorb the water.

Drain and discard the soaking water. Rinse the seeds under running water and put them in the fridge to sprout for another 4 hours.

Put the sesame seeds into a high-powered blender and blend until creamy. Use a spatula to scrap the seeds down from the sides as needed until there are no more whole seeds left. If the water is too dry add water one tablespoon at a time to keep the mixture moving.

The Tahini will keep for about 3 days stored in a sealed glass jar in the fridge and can be used in salad dressing to make a rich, creamy dressing, in nut milks - 1 tablespoon tahini per cup of water to make the quickest, easiest nut milk possible, add to chickpea hummus, add herbs and spices to make raw vegan seed cheeses or add a spoonful to raw tomato-based pasta sauces to make a delicious creamy pasta sauce :)
